1949 Plymouth Electric Gas Cap

The cap assembly, wiring, straps, control button and installation instructions.

(Copy of) DIRECTIONS (From box)

Open cap by touching end of wires to terminals of six volt storage battery.

To determine best position for installation place cap on filler pipe of car. Note position of the FOUR WAY HOLES IN BASE OF CAP in relation to CUTAWAY SECTIONS IN FILLER PIPE, and note POSITION where WIRES must go between FILLER PIPE and RUBBER GROMMET on car fender.

REMOVE CAP and insert the two long screws into the proper holes in base of cap, and screw the two lugs on ends of screws before placing cap on filler pipe. This prevents losing the lugs in gas tank. (For installing the cap on cars with large filler necks, use the two elongated holes.)

Place gasket inside base of cap. Insert screw driver in proper position between filler pipe and fender grommet. Draw wires through until cap comes into contact with filler pipe. Jiggle the two lugs until they slip underneath cutaway section of filler pipe. Draw the cap down tightly.

Fasten the short wire SECURELY to any convenient bolt on frame of car. Run the long wire along frame of car to dash-board and attach to one side of push button. Cut off surplus wire and attach to opposite side of button. Attach button to dash-board by means of thumb screw. Clamp the small wire clip on the end of wire and attach to gas gauge connection on ignition switch so that the cap cannot be opened unless ignition is turned on.

To operate, turn on ignition switch and press button ONE OR MORE TIMES.

Points to check: Inspect ground wire, and all wire connections.

Cap with damaged wires clipped off.

Clipped wires are in the black rubber grommet in upper left.

Backing plate removed to allow access to internal assembly.

Fiber shield removed from solenoid coil and wires.

Screws shown just above "Snap-Up" in casting must be removed to release the solenoid coil.

Coil, spring and plunger.

Note: One wire is soldered to the mounting bracket. This will ground that wire.

This may have lead to the destruction of many of the caps when mechanics switched the wires to "correct" for 12v negative ground conversion from the old 6v positive ground.

New wires soldered into position.

Coil assembly reinstalled.

Fiber shield reinstalled, heat shrink applied and a tie wrap added to anchor wire against grommet.

Cover reinstalled and rivet posts peened to secure it.

Completed assembly.

One of the lugs used to hold the cap to the filler neck.

Cap installed on 1950 Plymouth.

Less hassle than a keyed cap and it looks much better.
