General
Two years ago there was a tour from the San Francisco Bay area to
the national meet in Santa Maria, California. That tour took three
days to cover about 300 miles. Every road, every turn, was pre-driven
to assure that the roads and stops were appropriate. We avoided
freeways where ever possible (only a few miles total were on
freeways).
This tour is different. We are covering as many miles in one day as
the entire Santa Maria tour. We will spend hours at a time driving on
freeways (most of US 101 in California is a freeway). North of Eureka
we are entering territory that is unfamiliar to the tour leader. Rest
and sight seeing stops, restaurants and lodging have selected largely
based on Internet searches. Consider this an adventure!
Questionaire Results
Early responders to the request for participants were given
an email questionaire regarding what they would like on the tour.
Here are the results:
1. What speed are you comfortable driving your Plymouth?
“I can handle any speed the group prefers”
“I will be driving my 1965 Barracuda so speed would not be a
factor for me.”
“50- 55 MPH”
“62ish mph is great for us”
“Speed around 55 mph, would prefer not to exceed 60.”
Decision: Will assume 50 MPH for planning, probably
actually drive around 55 MPH
2. How many hours per day are you comfortable driving your
Plymouth?
“I’m used to driving for long stretches, but probably don’t want to push
more than 9 hours per day. Again, whatever the group likes, I’m good with.”
“For old cars I think that 300/350 miles should be max. We did 500 plus in
the Yellow Rose going to Omaha for the Chrysler convention and it was tough.”
“6-8 HRS”
“6-8 hrs is fine”
“Not to exceed 8 hours, preferably during daylight hours.”
Decision: Will try to keep driving to 6 hours but if the
legs don’t work out allow up to 8.
3. How many hours maximum between rest stops?
“No bladder problems here lol...”
“A stop every 2 hours is about all my bladder can do.”
“2-3 HRS”
“3 hrs. between rest stops - Fuel range is about 200 miles.”
“I can get approximately 200 plus miles from a tank of gas so maximum driving”
time would be 4 hours.”
Decision: Rest stops every 2 hours, filling station every
150 to 200 miles.
4. What type of lodging would you prefer (cheap motel okay,
specific chain, bed & breakfast, etc.)?
“Prefer less expensive lodging, but not at the expense of security for the cars.
Prefer to stay away from bad neighborhoods and locations where cars are not within
clear site of the rooms. Newer Motel 6s are fine, but typically something like
Comfort Suites in the $80 to $100 range are better.”
“No Motel 6’s. Best Western or Comfort Inn are not too bad.”
“MEDIUM HOTEL”
“Any lodging is fine. Cheap motels don’t bother us at all, and if it’s just a
night’s sleep (arriving late and leaving early), the cheaper, the better. If
it’s a well known lodge, location, etc. we don’t mind paying the price.”
“I do not have a preference, whatever makes the majority comfortable.”
Decision: Will pick towns where AAA guide indicate several choices including
at least one that is “a step up” from Motel 6.
5. Any specific sights you would like to see?
“I’m kind of interested in seeing the coastal area beyond Humboldt, but I’m very
open to suggestions”
“Sights are up to the tour leader.”
“NO”
“Don’t really have specific sites, as we’ve been through Oregon a few times.”
“I really don’t know any specific sights to suggest, again, I am willing to go
along with whatever is decided upon.”
Decision: No help here. I do have an idea for the first day
north of SF as its an area I’ve traveled. For further north it
will be a challenge.
6. Any specific route that you would prefer to take up
and/or back?
“See #5”
“Route is up to you.”
“NO”
“We’ll be coming back on #5 (probably on our own). Plan to visit friends in
Grants Pass. Would prefer not to go up #5, unless you are planning on Crater Lake.”
“It would be nice to travel one route going there and another coming back. I
haven’t spent much time north from Los Angeles area so I am not too familiar as
to which are more interesting routes.”
Decision: US 101 north from SF Bay area, taking three days.
I-5 south taking two days.
7. Should I even ask if your willing to drive at night?
“I can drive at night just fine if needed.”
“No night driving unless it is needed to catch up due to a repair problem.”
“WILL DRIVE AT NIGHT”
“Night driving doesn’t bother us.”
“I am willing to do some night driving but not for an extended period since
my eyes tend to get very tired at night.”
Decision: Night driving only to catch up from repair problems. We will be
traveling during the longest days of the year so night driving should be
unlikely even in event of repairs.
8. Other unsolicited answers:
“These are just my own thoughts. At present I think we will be doing the trip
in 2-3 days and arriving on Wednesday. We will probably will only participate
in the Thursday-Saturday trips and activities.”
“My wife will be flying up to the National Meet and flying back so she won’t be a factor.”

At about 300 miles of driving and nine hours
from departure to arrival, this will be our longest day. Expect
cool foggy weather while crossing the Golden Gate Bridge and
again near Eureka. Expect hot, possibly 100°F temperatures,
inland between Santa Rosa and the Avenue of the Giants. |
| Depart 8:00 AM |
“South Bay” meeting
point will be the Sharon Heights Shopping Center at
the intersection of Sand Hill Rd. and Sharon Park Dr. in Menlo
Park. There is a filling station here but this is the center
of the venture capitalist area and I’d expect the prices to be
high. |
| |
Drive through San Francisco.
Route will be up I-280. If possible we will exit onto Skyline
Drive, go up Great Highway, go through the Presidio to get to
the Golden Gate Bridge. If the Presidio connection to the
bridge is closed (there is construction in the area) our
alternate route will be I-280 to 19th, through Golden Gate
Park and onto the bridge via Doyle Drive. Either way we will
avoid the worst of San Francisco traffic and the famous
hills. |
| Arrive about 10:00 AM, Depart 10:30 AM |
“North Bay” meeting
point. At about the 93 mile mark and two hours of
driving, we will stop at the Chevron and Denny’s at 1715 Santa
Rosa Ave in Santa Rosa. This is the “Santa Rosa
Ave/Baker Ave” exit as seen on north bound U.S. 101.
Here we will pick up members coming from the East Bay and
North Bay areas. |
| Arrive about 12:00, depart about 1:00 PM |
Lunch In another 84 or so
miles (1 3/4 hours driving) we will stop for lunch in Willits.
No time for the Skunk Train unfortunately. Google search turns
up Perko’s Cafe at 1740 S. Main St. as a possible dining
spot. |
| Arrive about 2:00 PM, depart about 2:30 PM |
Drive through tree 44 miles
up the road from Willits (1 hour) we will take a side trip of
about a mile to visit the Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree (67402
Drive Thru Tree Road, Leggett). There is a small fee for the
area. Our cars are small enough to fit through the opening,
and there is a gift store and facilities here. |
| |
Avenue of the Giants
Continuing up U.S. 101 we will exit the main road just above
Garberville to take the old highway now know as the
“Avenue of the Giants” through the tall redwoods
in the park land that runs along the river. |
| Arrive about 5:00 PM |
Lodging 95 miles (two hours)
after leaving the Chandelier Tree we will be in Eureka. Eureka
is a small city rather than a large town and has a lot of
places to stay. I’d suggest the Best Western Bayshore Inn at
3500 Broadway St. (on the left of the main drag coming into
town). There is a Marie Callender’s at that location for
breakfast and a Kragen Auto across the street for your
emergency repair needs. |
| |
Dinner We have eaten
at the Waterfront Cafe and Oyster Bar, 102 F Street and
enjoyed it. They are moderately priced, take reservations
and, if I recall correctly, there is a large parking area
across the street. |
| Monday, June 14, 2010 |
Total miles for day will be 230 with seven
hours between departure and arrival. |
| Depart 9:00 AM |
Meeting Point
Best Western Bayshore Inn, Eureka, California. |
| About 10:30 |
Morning
First stop at about 70 miles will be at the “Trees of
Mystery”. If people want we can ride the aerial tram up
through the trees, but it should be a reasonable place to
stretch our legs and take a break regardless.
|
| Arrive about 12:00, depart about 1:00 PM |
Lunch
We will look for lunch in Brookings, Oregon about 50 miles
north of “Trees of Mystery”. Google turns up Suzie
Q’s (613 Chetco Ave) which might be a bit pricey.
Another possibility is One Love's Eclectic Cuisine (623 Memory
Lane, (541) 469-6100) which has great reviews on Google and Yelp. |
| |
Afternoon
We will continue north on U.S. 101. Google search did not turn
up anything specific for me but there do appear to be numerous
parks along the way. |
| Arrive about 4:00 PM |
Lodging
About 110 miles after lunch we will be in Coos Bay, Oregon.
There are a number of lodging options but the Best Western
Holiday Motel (411 North Bayshore Drive, Coos Bay, OR) seems
to have reasonable reviews. |
| |
Dinner
Open for suggestions. |
| Tuesday, June 15, 2010 |
About 226 miles for the day and six hours
between departure and arrival. |
| Depart 9:30 AM |
Meeting Point
Best Western Holiday Motel |
| |
Morning
On our drive north are some view points including
one of Heceta Head Lighthouse is one of the most photographed
sites on the Oregon coast. Gas/rest stop at or near Yachats,
Oregon |
| Arrive about 12:00 depart about 1:00 PM |
Lunch
At about 114 miles (2.25 hours driving) Jake's ( 2 miles
north of Depoe Bay) has been recommended by Tom Nachand. |
| |
Afternoon
The Deepwood Estate and Garden in Salem has been
suggested as an afternoon sightseeing stop.
Alternatively would be a drive by by slower roads
and a crossing of the Willamette River on the
Wheatland Ferry.
Barring those possibilities we will follow the suggestion I
have received from Tom Nachand, one of the meet organizers,
“as far as the route goes it’s 101 to Lincoln
City, Hwy 18 to Hwy 22 to Salem, Salem Parkway to Hwy 99E to
Gladstone, 82nd Drive to 82nd Ave to Sunnyside Road to the
hotel. ... It takes about 2.5 to 2.75 hours from my house [in
Lincoln City] to the hotel”. |
| Arrive about 3:30 PM |
Lodging
100 miles of afternoon driving will get us to the Monarch
Hotel and Convention Center (12566 SE 93rd Avenue, Clackamas,
Oregon). Estimated arrival time of about 3:30 PM. |
South Bound Itinerary
| Date | Time | Description |
| Sunday, June 20, 2010 |
Depart meet hotel. Trip will be down I-5.
It is about 670 miles via the Interstate from the
meet hotel to the South Bay area. While not a very
interesting place to stop, Yreka, California is about
half way. |
| Depart by 10:00 AM |
Meeting Point
Monarch Hotel and Convention Center.
|
| |
Morning
South on I-5
|
| Arrive about 12:00, depart about 1:00 PM |
Lunch
About 110 miles south from Clackamas is Eugene. Ought to be some
lunch possibilities here. If nothing better is found there is a
Denny’s just off the freeway at 3652 Glenwood Drive, Eugene, OR.
|
| About 3:00 PM |
Rest/Fueling
Continuing south on I-5, we will have a rest and refueling stop
around Canyonville which is about 100 miles south of
Eugene. |
| About 5:30 PM |
Lodging
After about 325 miles of driving for the day, and 120 miles (2.5
hours) after the last rest stop, we will be in Yreka. No
recommendations for lodging but there does appear to be serveral
choices including Holiday Inn Express, Super 8, Econo Lodge, Rodeway.
Google reviews indicate that the Best Western, Holiday Inn Express
and Super 8 are the better bets.
|
| |
Dinner
Casa Ramos Mexican Restaurant near the Super 8 seems to have the
best reviews on Google for the restaurants in Yreka.
|
| Monday, June 21, 2010 |
Continue South on I-5 |
| About 9:00 AM |
Meeting Point
|
| About 11:00 AM |
Gas/Rest Stop
I-5 South for about 100 miles to Redding for our first scheduled
rest stop.
|
| About 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM |
Lunch
Another 100 miles south on I-5 gets us to Williams where there
appears to be a number of lunch possibilities. Granzella’s
at 451 6th Street has reasonable reviews and there is always
Denny’s at 524 4th Street.
|
| |
Afternoon
About 25 miles south of Williams (1/2 hour driving) we get to
the I-5/I-505 split. Folks heading for Southern California
probably want to continue down I-5 to Sacramento. Bay area folks
will take I-505 with people peeling off in Vacaville or
Fairfield for north bay destinations. About 150 miles of driving
after lunch should get the south bay people home with arrivals
around 5:00 PM.
For those heading on to Southern California there is the option
of I-5 or route 99. There will be more lodging and meal choices
on 99 but I-5 is slightly shorter.
